What is the Internet of Things? Internet of Things, also known as IoT is a term we hear very often lately. But what is it exactly? What is the concept behind its design? What is its use?
IoT is a system of interconnected entities that can transfer data over a network, that is the Internet, without requiring human interaction. It is like these entities have their own “pulse” which based on some conditions triggers events and transmits certain data.
Examples of entities that can be part of Internet of Things (IoT)
Examples of entities that can be part of Internet of Things are:
- Physical Devices
- Vehicles
- Buildings
- …and much more.
According to Wikipedia, all the above entity types, in order to participate in IoT must have a common characteristic. They must be embedded with the necessary electronics, sensors, software and networking connectivity as well as have a unique identifier in order to be able to operate as independent units of the broader interconnected system of Internet of Things.
Based on the above, essentially anything can become part of the Internet of Things. This of course needs to be governed by policies which will define the actual usage of IoT and its impact in our lives. There are ongoing discussions for years that try to find/define the broad usage of IoT and set a respective framework on how it should be used in order to offer the best possible benefits to people.
Another aspect when discussing about IoT is security. As all these devices are, or will be, exposed to the Internet, a proper security framework must be designed and implemented in order to protect these devices/units from unauthorized access.
Examples of usage of the Internet of Things (IoT)
Examples of usage of the Internet of Things are:
- Have a sensor in your car which periodically checks the fuel level along with the area’s gas station distances and notify you when you need to visit the relevant gas station.
- Have sensors in your refrigerator which periodically check its contents and compile a shopping list in the end of the week.
- Smart plugs
- Smart locks
- etc.
Up to an extend, we can already see examples of Internet of Things in our everyday life as there are already devices which are used today and are part of the Internet of Things such as: smart plugs, smart locks, etc. However, Internet of Things is much bigger from what we realize. As technology evolves and IoT becomes more mature, I’m sure that we will see more implementations of IoT in different areas of our lives such as: businesses, healthcare, entertainment and more.
